The National Association of Councillors is an organisation which represents elected members in all types of local authorities and all political persuasions. The association is not only run for elected members, it is also run by elected members and is split into four regions which are England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Membership is available to Councils on a Corporate basis only. The objectives of the Association are set out in the constitution as follows:- 1. To represent and further the interests of members of local authorities in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. 2. To provide a forum for elected members to discuss items of common interest and exchange information and ideas. 3. To initiate consideration of matters of interest to elected members and to disseminate information to elected members. 4. To provide for the training and education of elected members. 5. To consult with central government and the devolved centres of power on the enhancement of the status of elected members. Each region/branch appoints its own officers and organises its own activities within national guidelines. The main policy-making body of the association is the General Management Committee which consists of representatives of the corporate member authorities and the regions. The General Management Committee meets four times a year, usually in London. The day-to-day running of the association is dealt with by an Executive Committee which consists of representatives from the regions in proportion to the number of Corporate Members. Northern Ireland The Northern Ireland Region of the association was set up in 1993 and we aim to assist our members by providing information and advice that will help them when working within their communities, and for carrying out the roles they may hold within their councils. We lobby local authorities, Ministers, government departments and other relevant bodies on issues that are of concern for councillors and we have made major gains in councillors’ allowances and conditions as a result of councillors acting collectively in their common interest. You can view the NAC NI Region Constitution by Clicking Here   Membership All 11 councils in Northern Ireland subscribe to Corporate Membership so that all 462 councillors from across Northern Ireland are Members of the NAC. Membership subscriptions are renewed annually to run from April to the end of March. Each of the 11 councils nominate 8 councillors as Members’ Delegates to represent their councillors at the NAC bi-monthly Members’ Meetings. All our members are welcome to attend these meetings but only the official council delegates can vote or make proposals and decisions. The NAC, NI Region Executive Committee meet monthly and consists of a Chairman, Senior Vice Chair, Junior Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Women’s Representative and other members who are selected from across the various political parties including an Independent representative. Members can also be co-opted on to the committee, subject to Executive approval. .
